You're sitting on your patio in Boca Raton around sunset. No mosquitoes in sight. Then suddenly you're covered in bites you never saw coming. Sound familiar? That's no-see-ums — and for many South Florida residents, they're actually worse than mosquitoes.

What Exactly Are No-See-Ums?

No-see-ums are biting midges — tiny flying insects in the family Ceratopogonidae. The most common species in South Florida is Culicoides furens. They're 1–3 millimeters long, roughly the size of a sesame seed or a printed period. You feel their bite before you ever see them, which is how they earned the name.

Despite being almost invisible, the females pack a serious bite. They use serrated mouthparts to slice skin and feed on blood, which causes the intense itching and raised welts that many people say are worse than mosquito bites. Reactions vary by person — some people barely notice, others swell significantly.

Where Do They Breed in Boca Raton?

No-see-ums don't use the same breeding sites as mosquitoes. They need damp soil and organic matter, not open standing water. In Boca Raton, their primary breeding areas are:

🌊

Canal Banks

The damp, organically rich soil along Boca Raton's extensive canal system is prime no-see-um habitat. Properties directly on canals see significantly higher activity.

🪸

Mangrove Areas

Mangrove swamps and their adjacent wet soil are classic no-see-um breeding grounds. East Boca neighborhoods near the Intracoastal are more affected.

🌱

Moist Lawn Edges

Overwatered lawns and consistently damp garden beds along property edges can support breeding populations, especially if there's organic leaf litter.

💧

Retention Ponds

The muddy shorelines of retention ponds throughout Boca subdivisions create breeding habitat, especially after rain softens the soil perimeter.

When Are They Worst?

No-see-um activity peaks during:

What Actually Works to Control No-See-Ums

What works, and what doesn't:

DEET-based repellents (personal)

Effective for personal protection. DEET at 25%+ concentration repels biting midges. Picaridin also works. Apply before going outdoors around dawn/dusk.

Citronella candles or torches

Provide minimal protection at best. The smoke and scent can repel nearby insects slightly, but no-see-ums are numerous enough that they bite right through it. Not a reliable solution.

Box fans and ceiling fans

Cheap and effective for patios and screened areas. No-see-ums can't fly against wind above ~5 mph. A good box fan pointed outward helps significantly.

Upgraded window screens

Standard 16x16 mesh screens don't stop no-see-ums. Replacing them with 32x32 or "no-see-um" mesh keeps them out of your home. More expensive but effective.

Professional barrier spray

Our MPB formula significantly reduces no-see-um activity in treated areas. Citronella and geraniol repel biting midges; the control component kills on contact. Customers consistently report improvement.

Bug zappers

Attract and kill many insects, but research shows they kill very few biting insects and many beneficial ones. Not effective for no-see-ums specifically.

Which Boca Raton Neighborhoods Are Worst?

No-see-um pressure in Boca Raton varies significantly by location. The key factor is proximity to the damp organic breeding substrates they need:

East Boca / Intracoastal communities Highest

The Intracoastal Waterway corridor — including neighborhoods from Boca Bay Colony through Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club to Addison — has the highest no-see-um pressure in the city. Mangrove shoreline, tidal mud banks, and near-zero wind between structures are perfect conditions. Sunset on an east-facing patio is particularly bad.

Canal-front neighborhoods (central and west Boca) High

Properties directly on Boca Raton's canal system experience significant no-see-um activity from canal bank breeding. The canals running through communities like Mission Bay, Boca del Mar, and Loggers Run canal sections see consistent evening activity from canal-adjacent populations.

Golf course communities (Boca West, Woodfield, Broken Sound) Moderate-High

Lake edges and moist rough/wetland areas adjacent to golf courses provide no-see-um breeding habitat. Properties backing to course water features experience evening activity that increases after course irrigation.

Inland suburban neighborhoods (western zip codes) Moderate

Furthest from coastal and waterway breeding sources. Still has no-see-um activity from retention ponds and irrigation-maintained landscaping, but less intense than eastern neighborhoods. Evening activity is primarily post-rain rather than year-round.

Do No-See-Ums Carry Disease?

In the US, no-see-ums are not a significant vector for human disease. They can transmit bluetongue virus to livestock, but for humans the primary concern is the painful bites and secondary skin infections from scratching. That said, in certain tropical regions some Culicoides species transmit parasitic infections — which is why their control matters beyond just comfort.

Common Questions

What are no-see-ums?+

No-see-ums are biting midges — tiny flying insects in the family Ceratopogonidae. They're 1–3mm long (about the size of a period at the end of this sentence), which is why you feel them before you see them. Despite their size, females deliver a disproportionately painful, itchy bite.

Are no-see-ums worse than mosquitoes?+

Many South Florida residents say yes. No-see-ums are smaller and harder to see coming, their bites tend to welt and itch more intensely than mosquito bites, and standard mosquito screens (with 16x16 mesh) are too large to stop them. They also swarm more aggressively around dusk.

When are no-see-ums worst in Boca Raton?+

No-see-ums are worst at dawn and dusk, especially on calm evenings with little wind. May through October is peak season in Boca Raton. They're particularly bad the day or two after rain, when new breeding sites have been filled and adults emerge in numbers.

Does professional mosquito spray help with no-see-ums?+

Yes. Our Mosquito Protection Blend (MPB) significantly reduces no-see-um activity in your yard. The formula contains citronella and geraniol, which repel biting midges, and the control component kills on contact. Customers frequently report reduced no-see-um activity alongside mosquito reduction.

Can I stop no-see-ums from coming inside?+

Standard window screens (16x16 mesh) don't stop no-see-ums — they're too small. You need 20x20 or 32x32 mesh screens to block them. No-see-um netting (sometimes called biting midge netting) is available for outdoor sleeping areas. Fans help indoors since no-see-ums are poor fliers.
